Inspiring Women China is a new programme launched by the British Council that aims to inspire young students, in particular young women, about the world of work, grow their ambitions, boost their confidence, and enable them to make more informed career choices. At the heart of this programme is a network of successful women from a broad range of backgrounds who volunteer their time to speak to students in schools about their work and the path they took to get there.

Ms. Xu Xinzhe, one of the volunteers in China, works for Hill+Knowlton Strategies’ Shanghai Office as a Senior Consultant. She came to Lingling High School and shared her stories of personal growth and career development with Lingling’s students of senior one/two as well as their teachers on Mar.23, 2017. Her presentation was vivid and impressive which reflected her past experience as a very successful learner and practitioner and triggered Lingling students’ further considerations of how to make choices for a better life at one’s significant transition points.

Matthew Knowles, Director East China of the British Council & Culture and Education Consul of the Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulate-General, also attended this event. He spoke to the students in an interactive way and reminded them to break down gender stereotypes by encouraging girls in particular to give consideration to occupations outside of those based on traditional gender roles.
