Founded in 1901, Shanghai Nanyang Model High School (SNMHS) was the attached high school to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which grew once out of Nan Yang Public School. In 1959, the school was approved one of the key schools by Shanghai Municipal Government. Nowadays SNMHS has become a full-time key high school. With over century-long development, the school has now grown into two campuses with a total area of 37 mu, including 25,000m2 of school buildings and 5,000m2 of green coverage. The school is equipped with modern facilities such as an 200-meter-track playground, two indoor basketball halls, one conservatory hall and one T-hall, each of which can seat over 500 people. Besides, there are many multimedia and multifunctional classrooms, up-to-date laboratories and modern teachers' offices. The school has a facality of high-level teachers, including 6 special grade teachers and 50 high grade teachers, among whom there are three who are considered as Top Talent and three who as leading persons in their subjects. About 20 teachers in the school have got or are going to get master degrees in various subjects. Principal of the school, Mr Qian Yao-bang, is chairman of Science Education Committee in Xu Hui District, Shanghai, vice-chairman of Xu Hui Science Committee. In recent years, the school has been honored with titles of Shanghai Model Unit, Shanghai Model School of Students' Good Manners, National Experimental School of Modern Educational Technology, Shanghai Experimental School of TI Maths & Physics Technology, Shanghai Green Environmental School, Shanghai Garden Unit, etc. There is a Chinese saying that it takes ten years for a tree to grow up while it takes hundred years for a man to be reared. There has been over 40,000 graduates so far from the school, and they are in all fields of life across the country and the world as well. There are more than 30 graduates who are either the members of Chinese Science Academy or the members of Chinese Engineering Academy. Among them are Mr Zhang Guang-dou, expert in conservancy and electric engineering; Mr He Zhang-ma, physicist and philosopher; Mr Tang Xiao-wei, outstanding scientist in research of hydro and atomic bombs; Mr Chen Jun-liang, expert in communicative and electronic system; Mr Wang Xuan, expert in computer science. There are also other graduates who have become provincial or even national leaders, PLA generals, experienced diplomats, university principals, academic authorities, worldwide vips, world champions, famous actors and actresses, and numerous ordinary labourers. In April 1950, Chairman Mao Ze-dong inscribed "Qing Feng" (Young Pioneer) for the wall-newspaper of senior one students, which encouraged the whole school. In August 2001 when the school was celebrating its centurial anniversary, Chairman Jiang Ze-ming wrote a letter to the school, wishing all the students to be " models of life, study, patriot and progress", which not only encouraged the SNMHS students greatly, but also put the noble goals of her development in the new era.
